The
vocation to
the priesthood or to the religious life is a sacred one, but one which has
to compete with many other demands for attention in the modern world.
Each and every message has to compete in an overcrowded environment, where
impact and appeal are of the essence. The most glorious mission of life
means little if people remain unaware of it. The requirement for all vocational
promotion material is firstly, to be seen; and secondly, to evoke a positive
interactive response.
It
is critical that all vocational promotional material properly represents
the diocese or
religious order in question, as being meaningful, relevant and concerned
in the context of the general public and community; as well as (and possibly
more importantly) underpinning the relevance, cohesion and work of
the Church at large - presenting the message of Christ, in the context
of the community from which Christ's priests will come, and to whom they
will minister. In this regard, Quantum takes to heart the Pastoral Instruction
from the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, "AETATIS
NOVAE" (Rome, 1992), "ETHICS
IN ADVERTISING" (February 22, 1997), "ETHICS
IN COMMUNICATIONS" (June 2, 2000), and from
the "PASTORES
DABO VOBIS" in relation to the need to take full advantage
of developments in media and social communications.
